Pet insurance cost by breed and state
Two dogs with identical coverage can differ in price by a factor of four. Premiums are priced on expected claims, so the two biggest inputs are what breed you own — its documented hereditary risk profile — and where you live, because insurers pass local veterinary fee levels straight through to your premium.
Each page below combines the breed's national premium range with a state-level cost multiplier derived from regional veterinary fee surveys. Pick your breed, then your state.

Why premiums vary this much
Breed is the biggest pricing lever. Brachycephalic breeds like the French Bulldog and Bulldog generate roughly double the lifetime claims of an average dog, and insurers price that in from day one. Giant breeds carry elevated orthopedic and cardiac risk; long-backed breeds carry spinal risk. Each breed page links to the health risk table that drives its premium band.
State sets the baseline fee schedule. A cruciate repair that costs $3,500 in Ohio can run $5,000 in California, and premiums follow the underlying vet bill. Our multipliers run from 0.90 (Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina) to 1.25 (California) against a national baseline of 1.0.
Age multiplies both. On every combination page we show the puppy, adult, and senior premium tiers — senior coverage typically costs close to double the adult rate, which is why enrolling early locks in the best lifetime economics.
